Further details
Presentation 1: SPIRIT in Care: creating a guide for care home workers to support residents with spiritual needs
Speaker: Dr Olivia Luijnenburg, King's College London
Overview: The spiritual needs of care home residents are often overlooked or misunderstood, yet it is increasingly recognised as an important dimension of holistic care for older people and people living with dementia. Interviews with residents, family members, care home staff and registered managers informed guidance on how to implement spiritual care in care home practice. Subsequently, co-development workshops were organised with care home staff and relatives of care home residents to develop the SPIRIT in Care guide. The guide aims to support care home workers with recognising and implementing spiritual care in day-to-day care practice.
Presentation 2: Spirituality, wellbeing and community in residential care homes
Speaker: Dr Helen Hindle, University of Manchester
Summary: In this presentation, Dr Helen Hindle will present findings based on research she conducted in care homes. Helen will explore the experiences of older people living in care homes through the lens of shalom. In doing so she will highlight different zones of community and spirituality that people living in care homes experience and provide recommendations to enable care home professionals support older people.
