Another new Anna Chaplain in the Peterborough Diocese

It was a joyful occasion at St James Church, Hollowell, on Sunday, August 9 as Helen Honeywell was commissioned by the Revd Judy Craig-Peck as an Anna Chaplain.

Liz Kelly, the Diocesan Co-ordinator and local trainer was there to support Helen and to explain to the congregation a little about what Anna Chaplaincy is.

Helen writes, 'Last Sunday I was commissioned as an Anna Chaplain for the Uplands Benefice in the Peterborough Diocese. This was a moving occasion where I felt the confirmation of a calling to befriend and support older people.

The story of the elderly Simeon and Anna receiving Jesus as a young baby in the temple, is one of my favourites. As a result of their years of faithful worship,  they finally behold the Christ child. Anna Chaplains are named after this prophetess, and hopefully carry affirmation, joy and comfort out into the world.

Many years ago, when I was a young mother, I was privileged to know several older people in the congregation. These couples prayed for me and supported me, and I quickly learnt to cherish their spiritual wisdom and understanding.'

'At the same time, as their bodies became frailer, I realised that they had needs too. I remember thinking that when the children went to school, I would choose not to get a job as so many people in the church needed support as they aged.'

'Fast forward many years, I have joined the Uplands Benefice, I am a commissioned Lay Pastoral Minister, and my main role is to take Communion out to people in their homes. I decided to join the training for Anna Chaplaincy, knowing it would enhance my understanding of both the joys and trials of advancing age.'

'I realised that I love being with older people and would like to develop this ministry further. I am praying and asking God to show me the next steps, to reveal to me ways to reach out to those around me and bring His love into their lives.'
