Complete with bunting they had hand-knitted themselves, the Elderberries marked VJ Day at St Mary's Church in Ely, with around sixty people attending the Anna Chaplaincy event.

Beth Georgiou reports that the Revd Stephen Leeke led a moving service, with volunteers taking part. A highlight of the service was a video of members sharing their childhood memories of VJ Day 80 years ago. We heard how the Conga was danced round and round the market square, and there was a street party - with pink blancmange - a rarity after the days of rationing.

After the service this year we all enjoyed a splendid Afternoon Tea. There was also a quiz and a sing-song, both on war themes, with plenty of energy in the room!

I'm sure this event will be talked about and long-remembered.'
