When Anna Chaplaincy ministry lead Debbie Ducille found herself in Brixton at the beginning of July for a family celebration, it seemed very appropriate to connect with BRF’s origins: St Matthew’s Church in Brixton. The church has just celebrated its bicentennial year, and information about their 200-year history was up on display, as Debbie discovered upon attending Sunday worship, which was a great privilege and very moving.
The church has proved resilient and adaptable over the years, and now meet in the front part of the church, a practical and beautiful space for welcoming worshippers and the wider community. Recognition of BRF’s founder, the Revd Leslie Mannering and his commitment to Bible reading and discipleship are honoured, as is his name, Debbie discovered, in the naming of a housing development on St Matthew’s estate nearby.
