Epworth, Scunthorpe and Gainsborough Methodist Circuit

is recruiting.

Lay Pastoral Worker; 20 hours per week (flexible as required) Salary £17,000 PA. Fixed term contract 1 year.

Location: Throughout the Epworth, Scunthorpe and Gainsborough Methodist circuit, with negotiated use of an office base at Ashby Wesley Methodist Church in Scunthorpe.

The role will run in conjunction with the ministers in pastoral charge, to network with volunteer pastoral care teams and leads already in existence and respond effectively with pastoral visitation to urgent and known needs within the life of the congregations and their communities.

Working with Circuit leadership team, volunteer pastoral teams and church stewards to support the staff team in providing pastoral care, funeral ministry and deepening of discipleship amongst church members and the community.

This will include visiting people in care homes and liaising with hospital chaplains. To offer extended communion to those who request it, ideally with a church pastoral visitor. Offer appropriate pastoral care at times of bereavement for members of the church and for those who look to the Methodist Church within the community. To lead funeral services based on the Methodist Worship Book – if the lay employee is not a local preacher, the services would include a eulogy rather than a sermon. Ensure that a good understanding of Methodist Church Safeguarding Policy is promoted.

It is a genuine occupational requirement that the post holder is a practising Christian.

Closing date for applications is 4pm on 7th September 2026.

For a copy of the job description, person specification, and application form please email: circuitoffice@esgmethodist.org.uk or telephone 01724 848015 or 01724 873891.
