If left unchecked, relational poverty and a lack of meaningful social connection in someone’s life can lead to feelings of isolation, depression and anxiety. Growing research indicates that men are one of the groups most likely to experience loneliness.
A free webinar, on Thursday, February 26 at 12:00pm will be led by Dr Antonia Ypsilanti and Andrew Wileman BEM, exploring the inextricable link between mental health and loneliness, and (particularly) its impact on men.

Antonia is a leading researcher on loneliness and its impact on mental health across the lifespan. Her work examines how individuals with diverse experiences of loneliness perceive, interpret, and navigate their social environments, and when and how loneliness becomes harmful.
She has developed a new framework for understanding persistent loneliness. In this talk, she will explore the nuances of loneliness experiences and highlight the importance of supporting people with persistent loneliness to reduce the risk of later mental health difficulties.
Andrew is the Lead on Loneliness and Isolation for The Salvation in The UK and Ireland. The Salvation Army’s work on Loneliness and Isolation in the UK and Ireland is at the forefront of understanding ‘relational poverty’.
Their most recent data shows that 6 out of 10 people who seek assistance from the Salvation Army report being lonely, and over half of that number say they have some form of mental health issue. In addition, nearly 2/3rds of those who reported loneliness and mental health as an issue were men.
Meanwhile, you may be fortunate enough to be within striking distance of an in-person event - the Campaign to End Loneliness Roadshow - which is on Tuesday, March 3, from 9.30am to 4.00 pm in Edinburgh, Scotland.
This is one of a series of Roadshow events, travelling around the UK, designed to bring policy makers, practitioners, researchers and people with lived experience together to tackle loneliness.
Participants will be able to join the UK wide conversation set on shaping action on loneliness and social connection. The event offers a mixture of informative talks, interactive workshops, and panel discussions to help us understand loneliness, how it can be tackled, and how we can create more connected communities.
