Portsmouth Cathedral celebrates Anna Chaplaincy’s ministry among older people

Updated: Feb 7, 2023

Thursday 2 February was a red letter day in the history of Anna Chaplaincy. An afternoon event was held at Portsmouth Cathedral for all new and soon-to-be commissioned Anna Chaplains in the diocese.

There were also a number of people attending to explore whether Anna Chaplaincy is for them. Read the diocese’s full account and see more pictures.

The day was led by Anna Chaplain Dr Coleen Jackson and Revd Sam Martell. The majority of BRF’s Anna Chaplaincy team was also taking part in the round table discussions.

The climax of the day came with a special Candlemas service held that evening conducted by the bishop of Portsmouth, Right Revd Dr Jonathan Frost, at which Debbie Thrower, pioneer of Anna Chaplaincy, preached about Jesus’ presentation in the temple and how Anna and Simeon have inspired this ministry among older people. The chief executive of BRF, Richard Fisher read a lesson from the Old Testament book of Malachi at the special candlelit service with a full choir, incense and a procession to the font and into the nave.

Portsmouth Cathedral has also published its own news of the day.
